Orphan Endowement Fund (Waqf)

Ongoing Charity ... Ongoing Reward (Sadaqah Jariya) ... Ongoing Support

Waqf or endowment is a form of 'Sadaqah Jariya' (ongoing charity). The original gift (money, land, property, assests) is kept intact. This gift is invested to generate a charitable return for the cause to which it was donated.

The Orphans Endowment Waqf Fund provides for the needs of an increasing number of orphaned children. With more than 3 million orphans and a 1 000 people dying daily in South Africa from the Aids pandemic, the need for long term initiatives to meet the needs of orphaned children is very urgent. The Orphans Endowment Waqf Fund is the ideal vehicle for generating acontinuing source of funds for the purpose of providing assistance and support for the most vulnerable members of our community. At the same time, making a donation to the Orphans Waqf Endowment Fund will be a continuing source of reward (Sadaqah Jariya) for the donor.

Orphans and Vulnerable children

The Orphans Endowment Waqf Fund has been established by Islamic Relief Worldwide South Africa in partnership with Iqraa Trust and Albaraka Bank to provide a secure and self-sustaining source of funds specifically to support orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa. A committee established by the three partners manages the fund.

Sadaqah Jariya

The opportunity to support the orphans and earn ongoing reward for your generosity.

A donation to the Orphans Endowment Waqf Fund will serve to provide funding for the support of orphans on a sustainable basis and will be a source of ongoing reward(Sadaqah Jariya) for you the donor because the funds you donate will be invested and only the income will be used to provide support for orphans and vulnerable children. The security of a home, someone who cares for them, good nutrition, better living conditions and education can be provided to these children through your generosity.

An Endowment/ Waqf share is an ideal gift for parents, children, family and friends. By initiating this type of gift you’ll find others will follow your example.

The Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Program

In 2005 Islamic Relief Worldwide launched its Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Program. The Program prioritises vulnerable children into the following categories:

  • Orphans, especially infants and child-headed homes.
  • Girl children.
  • Children infected and affected by the Aids pandemic.
  • Unaccompanied minor children from migrant communities.

Islamic Relief Worldwide supports the community care model as it allows the children to remain in their communities and parental homes, which in the majority of cases in South Africa are in rural areas and informal settlements.
Islamic Relief Worldwide recruits, trains and employs community care workers, mostly women from the community who support the orphans and vulnerable children. Care workers are supported by an Orphans and Vulnerable Care Officer who supervises their work and ensures they meet care standards expected by the Child Care Act.

Islamic Relief Worldwide staff ensures that the orphans and vulnerable children have access to essential services. They strengthen the capacity of primary care givers such as grandparents, mobilise and support community based responses, advocate the protection of children, raise awareness towards a supportive environment for the children and on a daily basis ensures that the basic needs of children such as education, nutrition, health care and shelter, are met.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) gave advice to a companion, who had acquired land. The Prophet said, “If you wish you can give the benefits of the land to charity whilst preserving it so that it may no longer be sold, nor bought, nor given away, nor bequeathed.” The companion then dedicated his land as 'Sadaqah Jariya' (ongoing charity) to the benefit of the poor.

Donors have 3 options in donating to the Orphans Endowment WAQF Fund (OEWF):

Donate towards 1 or many WAQF Shares

The orphans endowment WAQF Fund is promoted as shares. Shares are set at R 500. The donors who purchases shares are entitled to a waif deed and receipt.

Total contribution towards OEWF = R 500 = the Waqf Capital R 450 + Admin fees R 50.

The Waqf Capital (R 450) is transferred and invested into the OEWF Regular Income Provider Account with Al Baraka Bank.

Donate towards Orphans WAQF Support Fund (WSF)

The WAQF Support Fund allows a donor to contribute any amount less that R 500 towards the OEWF. This is used to support the OEWF.

As donors are contributing a varying amount of money, their donation to the WSF does not entitle them to a waqf deed, although they will receive a receipt for their contribution.

90% Of the amount donated is WAQF Capital  and invested into the OEWF Regular Income Provider Account with Al Baraka Bank.

The remaining 10%  is admin fee and remains in the OEWF Debit Card account .

Allocation of profits

The  developing value within WAQF is ingenious in that it perpetually retains the capital invested, spending only from the profits gained

At the end of the year, the profit generated by the WAQF Capital (OEWF Regular Income Provider Amount) is distributed as follows:

§  80% goes towards implementation of the Islamic Relief Worldwide SA orphans project - funds are transferred to the Islamic Relief Worldwide SA account

§  10% Admin costs; and

§  10% of the returns is reinvested into the Waqf investment to cover inflation and capitalization.

However, these percentages are approximates and are changeable as per Board of Trustees’ discretion.
