East Africa Crisis Appeal
Brief History:
The drought in the Horn of Africa is affecting more than ten million people from across Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. A deadly combination of successive failed rains and rising food prices has resulted in the worst drought the region has seen for 60 years.
Islamic Relief Worldwide has been working in the region as early as 1993, when we extended our Orphan Sponsorship programme to Kenya. In February 2006, a registered field office was opened in Mandera and an emergency relief programme was set up to help people affected by the food crisis.
Our Somalia office was established in 2006 in Garowe City, the capital of Puntland state. However, we have been operating on an ad hoc basis since 1996, carrying out seasonal Ramadan and Qurbani projects.
Islamic Relief began working in Ethiopia in 2000, responding to the drought crisis. An office was officially opened in January 2004. In addition to emergency relief, we implemented long-term development projects in the area.
UPDATE 4:
Our emergency response team, who is currently on the ground, has identified key sectors that have been prioritized i.e. food aid, nutrition, health, water, sanitation and hygiene and skills development and training in agriculture for sustainable livelihoods.
