Pakistan Floods appeal

Reconstruction Phase Update:

Islamic Relief has begun working on the two year reconstruction phase, which will involve rebuilding 60 villages, in Khyber PakhtunKhwa ( Nowshera and Charsadda districts), Punjab (Muzaffargarh and Nohanwali districts) and Sindh (Thatta district).

Each village will be rebuilt with an integrated approach, ensuring all the village needs are met and will include:

- Flood and earthquake resistant housing for approximately 200 families

- Deep borehole wells, which will be dug deep enough to withstand further funding.

- Underground piping system, providing water to each household

- Livelihood assistance, helping farmers re-cultivate their land through the provision of seeds, tools and livestock

- Ensuring that all children will have access to education

All reconstruction work is completed in consultation with the local communities and all paid labourers are also employed from the local communities, thus ensuring greater benefit for each community.

Islamic Relief has started a R23m appeal to provide assistance to survivors who need clean water, food and shelter.

However, spokesman Moustafa Osman said it is cash that is needed.

"The first part of the appeal is to help people with life-saving items - tents, blankets, bed sheets, water purification tablets and all they need to save their lives," he said.

After that, the money will go to clearing away mud and landslide debris, he added.

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered the worst floods since 1929 in Pakistan's northwest, killing more than 400 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee from their homes

Three days of torrential rains caused rivers to burst their banks in several places and unleashed widespread destruction in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, destroying houses, bridges, schools, roads and railway tracks.

Amongst the worst hit areas are Nowshera Charsadda and Swat with hundreds and thousands of people without food, shelter or clean water.

"We fear the death toll will rise once the water recedes. We are facing the worst disaster in the history of our province" said Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain told reporters in the provincial capital of Peshawar.

Islamic Relief has been working in Pakistan since 1991 and has played a key role in aiding and serving the people when emergencies arise. After a deadly earthquake hit the region in 2005, Islamic Relief helped raise more than £35 million in aid for the victims.

Islamic Relief has also successfully implemented development projects in Pakistan, including orphan support, health and nutrition, water and sanitation, vocational training, and many others.
